What you can expect from a Wisdom Tooth Extraction Procedure

Wisdom teeth are the last ones to develop during your young adulthood. Because these teeth are formed at the back, they often don’t get enough space to fully form, causing agonizing pain. Dentists at Pearland often suggest that the wisdom tooth be surgically removed. If wisdom tooth doesn’t get enough room to grow, it may also result in infection and other dental problems. Let’s take a look at the wisdom tooth extraction process in detail to help you stay prepared.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction Procedure

Dentists at Pearland dentistry will recommend wisdom tooth extraction for a number of reasons. The reason that this procedure is performed is that your wisdom tooth might be causing dental problems.

  • Your dentist will first use anesthesia before they proceed with the procedure. Dentists often opt for local anesthesia and inject it near the extraction area. This anesthesia will numb your gums, which will keep you from feeling any pain while the dentist performs the procedure. You will be wide awake during the procedure, but due to anesthesia, you will not feel any pain.

  • The dentist then starts the procedure by making an incision in the gum tissue to expose the tooth and bone.

  • The bone that is blocking access to the root is removed.

  • Sometimes dentists divide the tooth into several sections to extract it easily.

  • One the tooth is completely removed; the dentist will clean the removal site and any remaining tooth particles in the mouth.

  • Sometimes dentists stitch the area of the extracted tooth to promote healing.

  • The dentists will place gauze to block bleeding and to allow a blo0d clot to form.

Post- Surgery Instructions by the Dentist

Once the procedure is successfully completed, you will be either taken into a recovery room or sent home based on your dentist’s suggestion. The dentist will also give you some instructions to follow after the procedure that are given below:

  • Remove the gauze from your mouth following your dentist’s instruction.

  • Avoid excessive spitting as it can cause the blood clot to be displaced.

  • Take pain relievers as per your dentist’s suggestion.

  • Eat ice-cream right after your tooth has been extracted as it helps stop bleeding.

  • Holding an ice-pack on your cheeks also helps relieve pain and swelling.

  • Avoid carbonated and caffeinated drinks for a few weeks.

  • Do not eat hard foods for a week.

  • Make use of mouthwash instead of toothpaste.

  • Avoid using brush.

  • Do not smoke for at least 72 hours.

  • Do not touch or disturb the surgical area with your tongue.

  • Chew food gently.

  • Avoid excessive activity for a few days as it might cause the blood clot to get displaced.

Following your dentist’s instructions will help heal the wound without any infection or pain. Dentists at Pearland will follow-up with you after the procedure to ensure that your wound has completely healed.
