How to Protect Your Teeth’s Enamel from Demineralization

The enamel is the protective layer of the teeth and its high mineral content makes it quite strong. Once the enamel starts to demineralize i.e. lose minerals, the teeth become vulnerable to cavities. Avoid sugary and acidic drinks:

Drinks that have high acid content e.g. citrus juice may be harmful to your enamel; drinking them regularly is not advisable. Same for soda drinks; these are rich in sugar and contributes to the demineralization of the enamel.

Avoid brushing too hard:

Brushing too hard is bad for your enamel. Also, avoid toothbrushes with extra-hard bristles; they wear the enamel down.

Eat more vegetables and dairy products:

Your enamel may demineralize if you don’t ingest enough minerals e.g. calcium and phosphates. These are commonly found in dairy products and in leafy vegetables.

Fluoride is good:

Fluoride is one of the minerals that make the enamel strong and it can be found naturally in wheat, seafood, and mineral water.

Drink lots of water:

By staying hydrated, you ensure that your mouth is adequately salivated. Saliva offers natural protection to the enamel and the more your mouth produces, the better for your teeth.
